Trained as a classical “au plein air” painter, Jan has evolved a unique sensibility into her oils, acrylics, and mixed media collage work. Jan Newman's paintings and collages are creating a psychological escape from the realities of life. She seeks to reflect a vibrant energy with themes derived from nature, fashion, music and literature.
"My paintings are an expression of my emotions using the basic building blocks of structure and design. They encompass a current perspective on a subject. I try to suggest but never totally define a picture leaving my viewer to make that final response. As Gerhart Richter stated, “To define is to limit.” I create a landscape that is contemplative, using layers of paint and many colors to give depth to the surface. Often I use pigments that reflect light and reflect an inner glow, while giving a deep soul to my work.
